Cornerstone Of The Community
REVISED:By Frances Trujillo
In Staunton, Illinois, the Macoupin Art Collective (MAC) has become a cornerstone of the community, offering a space where creativity thrives, and connections are made. As the collective celebrates its 8th anniversary this March, Founder and Executive Brandace Cloud reflects on the journey of building a vibrant, inclusive art hub. This interview provides insight into the growth of the MAC and the collective’s future goals.
Since its founding, the MAC has been dedicated to making art accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or financial means. Over the past eight years, the collective has reached over 70,000 students, providing diverse programs and events that inspire creativity and foster personal growth. Brandace Cloud, speaking about the collective’s growth, emphasized the importance of adaptability, particularly during the pandemic. “When in-person classes were not possible, we launched the Art Bus, a retrofitted bus to bring art to communities,” she shared. This program has allowed the MAC to reach areas that would otherwise have limited access to creative opportunities.
The Art Bus has proven to be more than just a mobile classroom; it has become a vital tool for connecting people with the arts, regardless of where they live. While there have been logistical challenges, Cloud noted that the commitment to serving the community remains strong. “We’re always finding new ways to make sure everyone has the opportunity to engage with art, whether that’s through the bus or other outreach efforts.”
The MAC’s work goes beyond teaching artistic techniques; it’s about fostering a sense of belonging and community. Cloud emphasized that the collective aims to create an inclusive environment where people feel valued and empowered. “Our goal is to make sure everyone feels welcome. Whether it’s kids in after-school programs or older adults, everyone has a place here,” she said.
As the anniversary approaches, Cloud is eager to celebrate the MAC’s impact on Staunton. “The anniversary celebration on March 15th will be a fun day for the entire community,” she said. The event will offer a variety of art-making activities, designed to showcase the mental health benefits of creativity. It’s an opportunity for people to come together and reflect on the collective’s achievements while looking ahead to new projects and goals.
The influence of the MAC extends beyond the arts; it has played a role in revitalizing Staunton. Cloud shared, “I love seeing students connect with the town. After classes, they head to local businesses, discover new spots, and feel like they’re part of something bigger.” The MAC’s efforts have not only encouraged creative expression but also strengthened a sense of pride within the town.
Looking to the future, Cloud shared that while the MAC has been successful in Staunton, there are plans to expand its reach. “We’ve been able to help so many people through our current programs, and we’re excited about expanding our collaborations with local schools and organizations. We want to continue growing the community’s creative potential,” she said.
Throughout the interview, Cloud’s passion for the collective’s mission was clear. She reflected, “Art has the power to change lives. It can bring people together, spark new ideas, and help communities thrive.” The MAC has demonstrated that creativity, can foster stronger, more connected communities, and its work will continue to transform lives.
Recently, the MAC hosted a stained glass class on February 28, offering participants a chance to explore their artistic talents in a hands-on way. Attendees, including Editor Frances Trujillo from the Staunton Star-Times participating in the creativity. A great example of the MAC’s commitment to providing diverse and engaging creative opportunities.
As the MAC celebrates its eighth anniversary, it remains dedicated to building connections, inspiring creativity, and enriching the lives of Staunton residents. The anniversary event promises to be a celebration of all the collective has accomplished—and a look ahead to an even brighter future.
Everyone is invited to join the MAC-iversary celebration on March 15th. It’s an event where all are welcome, because at the MAC, “we are all friends”.
